Just to provide a second opinion, I liked the references to the episode and didn't find them jarring at all; they help establish continuity too. So you don't have to avoid them if you don't want to - matter of opinion. :)
Loved the story even though I'm not hot for Owen/Gwen; this is exactly the sort of thing I imagine would happen between them. Absolutely nothing cosy, Gwen feeling guilty. Though Owen finding her in the end is kind of sweet.
